Breast Implant Types

Breast implants have evolved markedly over time and are more advanced than ever. Breast implants are in the Top 10 most commonly used and researched implantable medical devices today.

A wide variety of implants have been approved by the FDA. These include saline and silicone options. Saline implants are made up of a silicone
outer shell and filled with sterile saline. Cohesive silicone implants are the more popular today due to their strength and natural appearance, featuring a silicone outer shell with a viscous silicone-gel filling.

How is Breast Augmentation Performed?

You will receive an anesthetic, which will keep you relaxed and comfortable during the procedure. Dr. Burke most commonly places the implants in a dual plane position which is partly covered by the pectoralis muscle and behind the breast tissue on top of the chest wall. This dual plane breast position has the benefit of a natural appearance and feel.

A variety of incisions are used to perform the procedure:

• In the lower crease of the breast (inframammary incision)
• Around the lower portion of the areola, or dark-colored skin around the nipple (periareolar incision)
• Under the breast fold (sub-mammary incision)

Placement of the incision location that best suits your needs is discussed and reviewed during your consultation. The incision is closed after the implant is placed. On average, the surgery typically lasts one to two hours, depending on the implants chosen and each particular case.

Breast Anatomy and Implant Size

The breast is composed of fatty, glandular, and fibrous tissues. Blood vessels, milk ducts, fat glands, and sensory nerves, and a large muscle called the Pectoralis Major are located within the breasts. Size, shape, and integrity of women’s breasts vary and are affected by many factors such as age, past pregnancies, natural skin elasticity, and
genetics. Most women have asymmetry, which is a difference in proportions from right to left.

Implants are measured in Cubic Centimeters (cc), not bra cup sizes. This is because bra cup sizes are not standard—a C cup from one brand may be entirely
different than a C cup from another. Additionally, a C cup on one patient, may fit differently than a C cup on another patient. Cubic Centimeters are used as an accurate measuring standard. This gives both the surgeon and patient the knowledge needed for a more precise assessment.

Preparing for Your Breast Augmentation Procedure

Breast augmentation is a straightforward procedure. Dr. Burke will discuss the different types of implants available. Whether you choose saline (salt-water–filled implants) or silicone (gel-filled implants) is up to you. Both are safe choices. Dr. Burke and his staff strive to
make sure you are comfortable and understand the procedure.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

Most patients experience some soreness, bruising, and swelling after their surgery. Dr. Burke prescribes medication to help manage discomfort. In the days following the procedure, you will need to wear a surgical bra. Dr. Burke advises avoiding lifting of over 5 pounds for the first several weeks following the procedure. Some
patients experience reduced sensation in their nipples after breast augmentation surgery. Usually this is temporary and returns to normal once healing is complete. Most of our patients are able to resume daily activities, including work, within seven to ten days.
